This is the current formula for max exp. 30 is the maximum for any stat now.

Each stat starts at 100 exp required.
Lets use strength as an example.

Also, when you raise a stat, all other stats' max exp increases by 20. So if you have 20 strength even if you havent raised a single speed stat it will require 600 exp to level up.

All the tiny tiny exp gains are basically ambient exp gains for when you're just playing. Sparring and walking with weights can be an OK way to gain exp.

Running - 0.05 exp/step
Elemental training - 0.1 exp/sec
Regenerating health - 0.1 exp/sec
Regenerating chakra - 0.1 exp/sec
Water Walking - 0.2 exp/sec
Meditating - 0.3 exp
Log Punching - 0.5 exp
Performing handseals - 1 exp
Walking with weights - 1 exp
Getting attacked - 1 exp
Punching someone - 2 exp
Punching someone with boxing gloves/bandages - 3 exp
Picking weed - 5 exp
Curse seal activation - 5 exp/sec
Picking herbs - 20 exp
Failing Genin Exam pt 1- 50 exp
Passing Genin Exam pt 2 - 100 exp
Rank D Mission - 100-140 exp
Failing Chuunin Exam Part 1 - 250 exp
Rank C Mission - 250-350 exp
Passing Genin Exam pt 2 - 500 exp
Failing Chuunin Exam Part 2 - 500 exp
Rank B Mission - 500-700 exp
Rank A Mission - 1300-1700 exp
Passing Chuunin Exam - 2500 exp
Jounin OR ANBU Promotion(can only take effect once per character) - 2500 exp
Rank S Mission - 2000-3000 exp
Kage Promotion(once only) - 5000 exp

+10 exp per enemy level
+25 exp per enemy level higher than you
-8 exp per enemy level lower than you
+30 exp for killing Rank C missing-nins, chuunins
+100 exp for killing Rank B missing-nins, jounins, anbus
+250 exp for killing Rank A missing-nins
+500 exp for killing Rank S missing-nins, akatsuki
+800 exp for killing kages

Death - Lose up to 5% exp unless you are a A or higher ranked criminal, Akatsuki or a village leader. Then you lose up to 10% of your exp.
Maximum exp you can lose:
Academy Student, Genin, Rank D Criminal - Can't lose exp
Chunin, Rank C - 30 exp
Jounin, ANBU, Rank B - 150 exp
Rank A, Rank S, Akatsuki - 300 exp
Village Leaders, Akatsuki Leader - 300 exp
